Chattanooga First Church Hosts Community Sing-a-long
3/1/10
CHATTANOOGA, TN—More than 450 people
welcomed in the holiday season at the first annual “Messiah” Community Sing-a-long
held Dec. 20 at the Chattanooga First Seventh-day Adventist Church. This
Chattanooga-area, all-denominational event was a unique opportunity for audience
participation in what has become the musical hallmark of Christmas.
“The planning committee was thrilled
with the community response,” said Mary Anne Poulson, event chair. “All our
pews were filled, not a space left in the parking lot. It was a blessing to
hear so many voices raised in this musical masterpiece.”
The audience sang Handel’s “Messiah” choruses under the direction of Dr. Lonnie
McCalister, former dean of music at Lee University, along with a 30-member core
choir, a chamber orchestra, and a children's choir. The chamber orchestra and
core choir was comprised of community members from surrounding churches of
various denominations and some Southern Adventist University students. Soloists
were Raine Hong, soprano; Andrea Dismukes, contralto; Marius Serban, tenor; and
Tony Deaton, bass.
The Chattanooga First Church’s “Messiah”
planning committee is already at work on the second annual “Messiah” Sing-Along
for Christmas 2010.
