Adventist Students for Christ Hold Campus Weekend

3/10/10

ATHENS, GA—University of Georgia’s Adventist Students for Christ (ASC) conducted their first Campus Weekend of the spring semester 2010 on Jan. 29-30 at the Athens, Ga., campus. Both services were held in University of Georgia’s Fireside Lounge, a cozy, welcoming multipurpose room inside one of the residence halls. The weekend’s theme was “How to be a Witness.” Campus Weekend kicked off Friday evening with a Sabbath welcoming program. Those who gathered on Friday evening ushered in the Sabbath with songs of praise, testimonies, and a series of interactive Christian games such as “bible bingo” and “scripture scavenger hunt.”

The guest speaker on Sabbath morning was Harold Cunningham, vice president for pastoral ministries and evangelism for the Georgia-Cumberland Conference. Despite the misty rain and biting cold, the beautiful Sabbath began with an interactive Sabbath school activity. The divine worship program was spirit-filled with unrestricted praise and worship, prayer, and a message charging God’s people to have a relationship with people before seeking to share God’s love with them. Approximately sixty college students and guests gathered to worship and remained after for the traditional Campus Weekend potluck. Until this point, the members of ASC had been trying to reach out to the campus in a relevant way. So on Sabbath afternoon, members and guests set out to distribute dangerously savory home-baked cookies, appetizing candy, and encouraging, handwritten Bible verses. As Adventist collegians, why not give spiritual and physical consolation to ease the stress of the scholastic Goliaths such as papers, tests, and presentations? With the new ASC mission: “Adventist Students for Christ is a student movement whose desire is to spread the gospel through outreach and teaching of God’s love to all we encounter,” the first campus outreach for 2010 couldn’t have gone better.

With the past Campus Weekend’s success, and a desire to generously slather the gospel throughout the UGA campus, ASC looks forward to having two more Campus Weekends before the semester ends. We ask for your prayers as we seek to bring people closer to Jesus through the love we exhibit amongst ourselves and through our service to our community.
