Welcome to the wonderful world of communication.

You have volunteered (or maybe you were drafted) to help promote your church or school. This means you will work with local media, write press releases, create newsletters, take photos, shoot video, and/or manage content for a website. All of these are means of effective modern communication.

Your ultimate goal is to share the love of Jesus by telling the story of what is taking place within your organization. Why do this?

  1. When you share the stories of what is taking place - you share Jesus.
  2. When you share calendar items, such as church sermons dates and times, Vacation Bible school, cooking classes or school music concerts and other events, you invite people to your facility and this is another way to share the love of Jesus.
  3. When you share stories for the Southern Tidings, Communiqué, or the Conference web site you give fellow Seventh-day Adventist Christians ideas on ways that will help reach more people with the good news of Jesus and His imminent return.

What you do as the communications director for your church or school is vital. You tell the story. You invite the community into your school or house of worship and you share Jesus. Your job is not always easy. You have to chase down people for details. You have to be determined to meet press or media deadlines and you have to write, edit a newsletter, take photos, shoot video and in some cases manage a website.

Can you do this? Yes. This web site tutorial has been prepared just for you. Please take a few minutes and glance over the areas in the communication tutorial outline where you want to begin. We have prepared samples of what you will need to do this job. We have examples and we want to help you. You may also want to read the monthly Practicing Communicating newsletter, published by the North American Division.

And welcome to your position in Communications. I hope you find it very rewarding and I pray that God will bless your efforts ten-fold.
